Cambodia's banks continue enjoying strong growth this year: vice-governor

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's banking sector has continued enjoying robust growth in both loans and deposits this year, Ouk Maly, vice-governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, said Wednesday.

The kingdom's 35 commercial banks had lent a total of 8.47 billion U.S. dollars to customers as of August 2014, up 34 percent compared to the same period last year, she said during the opening of a new sub-branch of the Bank of China Phnom Penh Branch.

On the deposit side, she said the banks had received a total deposit of 9.19 billion U.S. dollars as of August this year, up 39 percent compared to the same period last year.

"Banking sector is playing an important role in supporting the economy," she said, adding that the sector was currently very stable and healthy.

The vice-governor also said the non-performing loan rate, or bad loan, at the commercial banks was only 2.94 percent during the first eight months of this year.

The Southeast Asian nation has a population of about 14.8 million. Its banking sector has been serving approximately 2 million borrowers and 3 million depositors.
