BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Petrochemical giant Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd (Hengyi) is to fully fund a scholarship program jointly developed by University Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and China's Zhejiang University.

A total of 13 students from UBD have been granted the Chemical Engineering Scholarship Program. The signing event on Monday was witnessed by Dato Haji Ali, Deputy Minister at Prime Minister's Office and Chairman of The Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) .

Signing on behalf of Syarikat Hengyi Sdn Bhd was Mr. PC Huang, the Project Chief Executive Officer, whilst the students signed their agreements in the presence of parents as guarantors.

The scholarship sponsorship program is part of Hengyi's Corporate Social Responsibility in developing the Brunei's human capital by providing educational opportunities to Bruneians to realize their academic potential.

The program will sponsor UBD undergraduates who have completed their first 18 months program in UBD to undertake the later part of their academic studies and industrial training at Zhejiang University for another 18 months in Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical and Process.

The program will include placement in a petrochemical plant in China, where students will gain firsthand experience in a real live operational refinery environment for another six months. The undergraduates will then return to UBD for their last six-month academic program to complete their four-year module.

Upon completion of the program, the graduates will be offered employment at Hengyi Industries.

This sponsorship initiative is in line with the Energy Department at the Prime Minister's Office of Local Business Development (LBD) Directives to increase competencies and create 50,000 new employment opportunities in the oil and gas industry by 2035, in which 40,000 would be local employees.
