PHNOM PENH, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia is considering the development of an expressway network to meet the need for the country's growing economy, Minister of Public Works and Transport Tram Iv Tek said here Wednesday.

"The expressway network is one of the vital infrastructure for the modern industry or economy, and it is essential for future economic development," he said at a workshop on the Master Plan for Expressway Development in Cambodia.

The minister said many Asian countries, including neighboring Vietnam and Thailand, have formulated their national expressway network plans and are constructing expressway networks.

"Cambodia has been enjoying an economic growth and stepping toward the ASEAN Community," he said. "This means it is a good time for Cambodia to start developing an expressway network."

However, he said, such ambitious project would not happen in the country before 2020.

According to the master plan, Cambodia could build a national network of 2,230 km of expressways, connecting most of the provincial administrative regions, special economic zones, key transport centers, tourism attractions, border crossings and national defense strategic areas.

The project could cost up to 25.5 billion U.S. dollars.
