Experts discuss GMS agriculture cooperation in Kunming

Experts from China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia are in Kunming this Wednesday (Sep. 9) to discuss Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) agriculture cooperation.

On 8thSeptember, organized by Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (YASS), The ECCAST-GMS Study Tour and the 3rd Steering Committee Meeting was held in Kunming, Yunnan. Agricultural experts and the representatives of relevant departments from China, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia gathered in Kunming and discussed the future development of regional cooperation and exchanging of agricultural technology.

Date from 5th to 7th September, being organized into five working groups: potato, upland rice, soybean, sugarcane and plant protection, steering representatives visited fields.

In the beginning of meeting, "Yunnan - Southeast Asia International Agricultural Training Center was officially unveiled.

According to the reports, Rice planthoppers, rice blast and Mikania micrantha are the common plant diseases at the border areas whereby China adjoins the Southeast Asia countries. The cross-border spread of pet plant has caused severe agricultural economic losses. To solve the problem, the GMS agricultural pest control and prevention working group was established. It aims to jointly set up a platform for exotic pest plant warning and prevention.

The ECCAST-GMS is an effective multilateral cooperative platform. Exchange and Cooperation Consortium for Agriculture Science and Technology in GMS (ECCAST-GMS) established on 28-29 March 2008.The members are Cambodian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (CARDI), Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Science (YASS), National Agriculture Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI), Myanmar Academy of Agricultural, Forestry, livestock and Fishery Sciences (MAAFLFS);Department of Agriculture (DOA),Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Kingdom of Thailand and Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Science (VAAS).It aims at agricultural science and technology generation and utilization via cross-border cooperation and exchange among GMS countries so as to support food security, poverty alleviation and environment sustainability , and to lead agricultural development in GMS. From 2008, the member countries of ECCAST-GMS have exchanges 262 crop varieties involving upland rice, potatoes, soybeans and sugar cane, and 29 varieties of which offered by Yunnan Academy of Agriculture Science (YASS) have a significantly high production in Vietnam and other four counties.
