BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose 5.4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Wednesday.

The growth accelerated from the 5-percent rise for the first quarter of this year.

Food prices, which account for nearly one third of the basket of goods in the nation's CPI calculation, rose 11.8 percent from a year earlier in the first six months, according to the NBS. The figure was higher than the 11-percent increase in the first quarter.
