The highway linking Kunming and Bangkok has promoted China's trade with ASEAN and enhanced exchanges between the two sides since it was formally opened on March 31st 2008.

With a length of 1,800 kilometers, the highway is one of the 4 important land ways connecting Yunnan and Southeast Asia and South Asia. The in-China section of the highway is 688 kilometers, in-Thailand part is more than 800 kilometers and in-Laos one is 247 kilometers. It only takes about 10 hours from Kunming to Mohan Port presently, a border-town of China and Laos, and about 20 hours from Kunming to Bangkok. After the Mekong River Bridge is completed, it will take less time.

More-than-400-billion-US-dollar goods will pass through the highway annually after it is completed. Millions of Thai tourists will be attracted to Yunnan. It is expected to promote the development of tourism in China and Thailand. Thailand has become the largest tourism market to Yunnan, where about 270 thousand visitors travel to Yunnan annually.

Moreover, it takes 2 and a half days for Yunnan’s fresh fruits to enter supermarkets in Thailand.
