HANOI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The seventh ASEAN Air Chiefs Conference opened here Friday, drawing air chiefs or representatives from ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Speaking at the conference, Vietnamese Commander of Air Defense and Air Force Le Huu Duc said that the meeting provides an effective platform for ASEAN chiefs of air forces to interact and communicate with each other, thus enhancing mutual trust, confidence and understanding.

ASEAN air forces could intensify coordination in areas of flight safety, search and rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief by exchanging information and sharing professional expertise and practices, said Duc.

An enhanced cooperation among ASEAN air forces will contribute to promoting and strengthening ASEAN defense and military relations, serving as a concrete step towards realizing the ASEAN Political-Security Community by 2015.

In his remarks at the meeting, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Defense Nguyen Chi Vinh said that he hopes participants will put forward active initiatives to intensify defense and military power of each ASEAN country and effectively deal with non-traditional security challenges.
