KUNMING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The 1750-kilometer-long Kunming-Bangkok Highway -- running from Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, through Laos to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand -- is one of the four major links between China and Southeast Asia.

The transnational road opened to traffic in 2008, with most of it highway standard.

It reduces the travel time from Kunming to Mohan Port on the China-Laos border to 10 hours and halves the driving time from Kunming to Bangkok to 20 hours.

Driving times will be further decreased when the Houayxay Bridge linking Thailand and Laos is completed in 2012.

The road runs in China, Laos and Thailand for 688 kms, 247 kms and 813 kms, respectively.

It lays a solid foundation for the China-ASEAN free trade zone by improving the connectivity of the region.

It is expected to facilitate the transportation of over 400 billion U.S. dollars worth of goods and the journeys of millions of tourists.
