Yunnan’s flower industry bloomed during the past 5 years

Yunnan’s flower industry has been blooming during the period of the 11th Five Year Plan (2006-2010). Though the industry has experienced various difficulties, including international financial crisis, freeze and drought disaster, Yunnan flower has still been blooming. Yunnan has ranked 1st in the most diverse in the domestic flower industry.

In 2010, Yunnan’s flower planting area has increased to 630,000 mu from 240,000 mu in 2005, and flower totaled output value has increased to ¥23.2 billion from ¥5 billion in 2005. Besides, income of flower planting farmers has increased by over ¥4 billion.

Since the 9th Five Year Plan (1996-2000), fresh cut flowers have been greatly developed in Yunnan. And the fresh cut flower production has ranked 1st during 17 consecutive years. Up to 2010, 6.05-billion fresh cut flowers have been planted.

The flower planting area has been expanded, from the Dianchi Lake basin to Kunming’s surrounding counties and cities outside of Kunming. Some unique flowers including the Yunnan Camellia, the Orchid and the Alpine Rhododendron have been planted in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture and Baoshan City. Yunnan has become the largest base of planting marigolds and the biggest supplier of edible roses’ raw materials. Seedlings bought from Yunnan including carnations, gerbera and Chinese roses have taken up 60% of the domestic market. Besides, chrysanthemums seedlings which have been exported to Japan have taken up 30% of the market there.

During the period of the 11th Five Year Plan, the flower industry has been greatly helped by scientific innovations. One of the World’s Top 500 enterprises from England has invested the flower industry in Yunnan. And seedling traders from Japan, France and Holland have also come to Yunnan.

Up to the end of 2010, among the cultivated 145 new types of flower seedlings, plant variety certificates have been approved for 54 ones, including 3 certificated overseas. In 2010, the new seedlings have been planted on more-than-4,000 mu farmland. Fresh flowers of "Binqing" and "Jinyu" brands have been exported to Hong Kong and foreign countries.

Besides, logistic systems with diverse transportations have also been improved. According to the Kunming Customs, flowers transported by refrigerated trucks in 2010 have been increased by 50% over 2009.
