China maintains world No.1 auto market in 2010

Source:   Time:

Both China's auto production and sales exceeded 18 million units in 2010, rising by more than 30 percent to a record high. The figures also mean China maintained its position as the world's largest auto market last year.

Figures from the China Association of Automobile Manufactures show, December retail sales of passenger cars rose 27 percent from a year earlier. That was as buyers rushed to take advantage of tax breaks that were being phased out. As a consequence though, industry analysts expect monthly sales to fall in the first few months

of this year.

For the full year, the market is expected to grow 10 to 15 percent. Auto makers are looking to China to help drive revenues, amid weak growth in the United States and other major economies.
