Kunming strives for National Forest City

After winning the titles of green city, the best international image city, summer tourist resort city, one of the top 10 China’s happiest city and so on, Kunming will strive for National Forest City next year.

By 2009, the forest coverage rate in Kunming had reached 45.5 percent, according to the Kunming Forestry Bureau. The green coverage rate in the downtown area was 52.73 percent.

The city will promote several green projects in urban and rural areas next year. It is expected that the forest coverage rate of the whole city will be 46% and the public greenbelt per capita will reach 12 square meters by 2013.

The “National Forest City” was selected and awarded by the National Afforestation Commission and the State Forestry Bureau based on a series of strict evaluating indexes and systems, and was an important inspection standard for urban afforestation and ecological environment.
