Vice-Governor of Yunnan Province Kong Chuizhu (孔垂柱) said recently that Yunnan Province will rely on its rich forest resource to promote afforestation of biological carbon sequestration, and further develop low-carbon economy, to make Yunnan an important base for green food and green forest industries.

Climate change is a major international issue of common concern. Taking forestry measures to increase forest carbon sequestration and protect forest is an internationally recognized way for mitigation and adaptation for climate change.

Covering several provinces, Yunnan included, a national pilot project about forestry carbon sinks was launched in Kunming on November 17. China’s State Forestry Administration also unveiled a monitoring center for forestry carbon sinks here on the same day.

Located at the upper reaches of some major rivers of China, Yunnan is very rich in forest resources. It location plays an important role in ecological security strategy. Forest covers over 50% land of Yunnan, with total standing stock reaching 1.712billion cubic meters, taking the second place in China. According to preliminary calculations, the carbon capture and storage of the province has reached 3.13 billion tons.
