China Petrochemical Corp, which is also known as Sinopec Group and is Asia's largest refiner, has discovered gas during exploration work in central Myanmar, sources reported, citing a Myanmar energy official as saying.

The extent of the gas reserves is not clear yet, said the official. A spokesperson for Sinopec Group said he had no information about the gas discovery.

The Chinese oil giant has been exploring for oil and gas near Monyma, which is around 140 kilometers northwest away from the city of Mandalay, said Win Myint, engineering director of Myanmar's state-owned national energy group, Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise.

In addition, China Oilfield Services Ltd<601808><2883>, a subsidiary of China National Offshore Oil Corp, or CNOOC Group, is launching offshore gas exploration in a shallow water block in southwest, close to Sittwe, said Win Myint, adding that there are many exploration being made by Chinese companies in Myanmar, and all are in the exploration stage.

China is accelerating the development of its twin gas and oil pipeline projects in Myanmar, and the pipelines are expected to be completed by May 2013.
