China to develop relations with Singapore from strategic perspective: vice president

SINGAPORE, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Monday that China is willing to develop Sino- Singapore ties continuously from strategic perspective, and further strengthen practical cooperation with Singapore in various fields.

When meeting with Senior Minister of Singapore Goh Chok Tong, Xi said China will broaden and deepen its cooperation with Singapore and pursue win-win and common development so as to promote the bilateral relations to move to a higher stage.

The vice president said Singapore is a major partner of China in economic and trade cooperation, and closing economic and trade cooperation has provided strong material support to the bilateral relations.

Against the backdrop of the complicated and changing international situation, Xi said, the two countries should grasp the opportunities while facing challenges, intensify cooperative basis to expand traditional trade and investment, and tap potentials and develop new ways of cooperation.

He said the two sides should better implementation of China- Singapore free trade agreement and China-ASEAN free trade zone agreement, and fully utilize the joint committee of bilateral cooperation to develop such flagship projects as Suzhou Industrial Area and Tianjin Eco-City.

Xi said countries in East Asia should continue to stick to the principle of mutual respect and seek common ground, and acknowledge the different characteristics of countries in the region.

The countries in the region should stick to the principles and mode which have been proved to be effective and maintain the leading role of ASEAN, he said.

Singapore is an important member of ASEAN, and has played an important role in development of relations between China and ASEAN, said Xi, stressing that China will, together with Singapore, maintain negotiation and coordination to achieve new progress in East Asia cooperation.

Goh Chok Tong said that under current situation, Singapore should explore and strengthen cooperation in various fields including economy, trade and finance so as to deepen the relations of the two countries.

Before the meeting, the two leaders attended the ground breaking ceremony of China Culture Center in Singapore.

In the morning, the vice president visited the Biopolis, a bio- medical garden which is of advanced international level.
