Kunming to bid for the 8th China Flower Expo

Kunming will submit applications to host the 8th China Flower Expo, which is the first time for Kunming to participate in competition for biding the Expo. The main competitors are cities such as Tangshan, Xuchang, and Changzhou. Final voting results will be announced in December 2010, reporters learned from the Kunming City Bureau of Agriculture on November 14, 2010.

Initiated by China Flower Association in 1987, the Flower Expo has been held for seven times and gradually developed into a national flower show of the largest scale, the highest level and the greatest influence.

The 10-day Expo focuses on participation and entertainment, combining flowers and gardening exhibitions, trade talks, forums, and cultural activities. It is expected to improve people’s living environment, enhance exchanges and cooperation, and promote the development of the flower industry.

"This is the first time Kunming to bid for China Flower Expo and it will play an important role in promoting the development of the floral industries and Tourism in Yunnan", an official from Kunming City Bureau of Agriculture said.

Kunming is famous for its year-round temperate climate. It is often called the "City of Eternal Spring" and the "Capital of flowers". Fresh cut flower production is one of the chief industries in the province and has ranked 15 consecutive years with No. 1 in China.

Over 70% of the fresh cut flowers in China grown in Kunming and are sold to other provinces or exported to Hong Kong, Taiwan and international markets including Japan, Korea, Singapore and Thailand.
