BEIJING, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior official from the Communist Party of China (CPC) called for more information and media exchanges with the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during a meeting with senior ASEAN media officials on Thursday.

The Chinese government would encourage its media to cooperate with ASEAN counterparts on communication, human resources and information technology, said Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

Liu, a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and head of the committee's Publicity Department, said China and ASEAN had made progress on news and media exchanges over the past two decades, and played an important role in coping with the economic downturn and in improving Asia's prosperity and stability.

The ASEAN delegates, who had attended the Second Conference of China-ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information in Beijing, said the meeting had promoted traditional friendship and would improve strategic and cooperative partnership oriented to peace and prosperity between the ASEAN and China.
