Yunnan accelerates the construction of being a strong aviation province

With its unique geographical advantage, the aviation industry in Yunnan received rapid development in recent years. Its scale and passenger throughput have leapt into the front ranks in the central and western provinces in China. During the next National Twelfth Five-Year Plan period, Yunnan Province will improve the airport network system, increase the total number of provincial airports to 19, double passenger throughput, build the Kunming new airport into one of national large hub airports, and make Yunnan be a strong aviation province by 2015.

During the National Eleventh Five-year Plan period, Yunnan’s aviation industry developed rapidly. It has invested 19.75 billion yuan in airport construction. By now the total number of civil airports in the province has reached 12, which is top-ranked nationwide. The passenger throughput of Kunming Airport ranks the 7th in the whole country. The airports of the whole province have opened 236 routes connecting with 98 cities. A total of 30 domestic and international airlines entered Yunnan aviation market. Kunming airport has opened 71 domestic routes connecting with 159 domestic cities, 24 international routes connecting with 23 international cities and 3 regional routes linking Hong Kong, Macau, and Taipei.

The National Twelfth Five- year Plan period is an important strategic stage for the development of civil aviation of Yunnan. Yunnan will accelerate the improvement of the airport network system. In addition to the Kunming new airport and the Lugu Lake airport which are under construction, new airports have been listed in the plan including the Honghe, Cangyuan, Lancang, Nujiang and Deqin airports. They will form a layout with a large hub, six medium-sized airports,and 12 small regional airports, which will help to realize the comprehensive development of the airports.

Yunnan Province will further optimize the route network structure, and actively open routes to Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australia and North America, increase the number of international routes to 40 or more and augment the international visitors more than 10% of the total passenger throughput. By 2015, the provincial transport movements will achieve 480 thousand flights, the passenger throughput will come up to 50 million passengers, and the cargo and mail handling capacity will reach to 440 thousand tons.
